Also, you can only participate in one Chase Private Client, Chase Sapphire Checking or J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing bonus offer in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is based on the last bonus enrollment date.
Otherwise, the funds have to come from another institution.
How Does This Bonus Compare?
This one is a little different than your typical brokerage bonus because it requires you to have an existing account rather than opening a new one. Most brokerages give you cash to open an account, this is one of the few bonuses that is meant to entice existing customers to consolidate their accounts into one place.
If you have an existing J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing account and are happy with it, this bonus might be a nice little incentive to get you to consolidate your assets elsewhere.
As far as brokerage bonuses go, it’s not that great of a bonus. The best comparison is Ally Invest which offers a bonus based on how much you transfer in within 60 days of opening your account:
Deposit or Transfer Amount |
Your Bonus |
---|---|
$10,000 – $24,999 | $100 |
$25,000 – $99,999 | $250 |
$100,000 – $249,999 | $300 |
$250,000 – $499,999 | $600 |
$500,000 – $999,999 | $1,200 |
$1,000,000 – $1,999,999 | $2,000 |
$2,000,000 or more | $3,000 |
This is on top of an ACAT fee reimbursement (the fee you pay when you transfer assets from one brokerage to another, without selling them and triggering capital gains tax) of up to $150.
As you can see, if you transfer over $250,000 in assets to Ally Invest then you get $600. J.P. Morgan will give you just $400. Plus you’d be on the hook for ACAT fees, which can be pricey depending on the originating brokerage firm.
